From your Kitchen to your Bedroom
I can talk endlessly about coconut oil. My house is full of different bottles with it and they are literally everywhere: in the kitchen, bathroom, next to my bed and in my bag. The purpose of this post is not to overwhelm you with factual and chemical characteristics, and such fluff that can be looked up on Wikipedia, but simply to share my personal experience.
Let’s start with morning rituals. Perhaps most of you have heard of “oil pulling”. If not it is a simple daily regimen of swishing oil around your mouth for a few minutes before brushing your teeth each morning. Typically it is advised to use sesame oil. But have you tasted sesame oil on its own? Not the most tasty flavor to put in the mouth. Coconut oil is less thick in texture, has nice taste and aroma, and serves the purpose just as well. So what are the benefits? Fresh breath, whiter teeth, healthier gums, less respiratory issues and better digestion. To me this seems like fair results to be achieved in just a couple of minutes a day.
Smoothie for breakfast? Add a couple of spoons of coconut oil. First of all, it will speed up your metabolism. Secondly it is a natural anti-inflammatory. Coconut oil helps body to fight any signs of starting flu or oncoming seasonal cold; in most cases for me, incorporating coconut oil into the diet together with a yoga session will help speed up the lympha and is a guaranteed remedy to put me back on track in just a few hours.
If you’re thinking of other ways to use it in cooking - it is perfect for baking, just be careful with the amount you are adding as its taste and smell can be overwhelming if you’re sensitive to that. I would not recommend frying on it though, because this is not oil to use in high temperatures. Also mixing it with coconut cream makes it an amazing silky cake frosting.
Skin. Oh and here we can go wild with coconut oil: removing makeup is an amazing solution for any skin-type, best ever body moisturizer and perfect sunscreen (about 7 SPF) at the same time feeding your skin with antioxidants and vitamins - guaranteed golden tan and healthy skin. Wanna go a step further? Add few drops of orange oil to fight cellulite or lavender oil to help first signs of aging.
Incredible moisturizer for your hair. Sometimes my hair gets so dry from desalinated water here in Dubai and constant flights that I just put coconut oil on my hair, braid them and go to sleep. In the morning I will have most of the oil absorbed nicely by my hair (maybe partially by my pillow as well, but who cares, just throw into washing machine) and will be silky and shiny after shower.
Heads up on choosing the oil, there are two types: refined and virgin. Virgin one will be a bit richer and with stronger scent, can be yellowish in color but that’s ok, if you’re happy with coconut aroma, go for this one. Refined is processed, so it is clear color and without any scent or added perfume, oil is less rich and might be lacking some of its greatness, but recommended if you are sensitive to the smell and for small babies.
Brands? I personally just buy anything available in the grocery store, the easiest one to find is Parachute, costs about $1.50 a bottle. You can go with anything as long as it is oil and not butter, the latter will be too thick but great for cooking icing for example. Be mindful that coconut oil thickens in cool temperatures, so store it in warm place, in case you feel it is harder in texture than you'd prefer just put the bottle under warm running water for a few minutes.
Oh and last but not least, coconut oil is the best natural lubricant. Oh! Now I see you putting an extra bottle in the shopping cart for your bedroom.
